For many students, Martin Luther King Jr. Day means nothing more than an appreciated break from school. But this year, Assembly member Paul Fong is teaming up with the NBC Bay Area news station to host the King Day of Service and restore the true meaning of the holiday.

The Bay Area community is invited to join Fong and NBC reporter Scott McGrew as they clean and restore the Ulistac Natural Area from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Jan. 18.  Volunteers have the option of receiving community service hours.

"My dad's a really big part of giving back to the community and equality," Fong's senior daughter Sydney Fong said. "He just wanted something the whole community could do together."

According to Sydney Fong, the event will be televised through NBC, with volunteers ranging from community members to the San Francisco 49ers football players.

"We don't have school on Monday, but it's not just 'Yay, no school,'... it's actually to celebrate something," Sydney Fong said. "Everybody should go out and find... some kind of event to give back [with]."
