Stress-less kits, gym passes, free smoothies, and extra credit are all part of a healthy and balanced diet for Community Leadership's Health Commission's first Health Week, from Jan. 25 to Jan. 29.

The commission started working after mid-year break, coordinating lunchtime activities to help raise campus awareness. To provide a variety of health awareness, Health Week was added in addition to the second semester Blood Drive, another major Health Commission event.

Monday was Stress Free Day, primarily chosen because of the emphasis students place on stress and lack of sleep as part of their lives at MVHS, according to Health Commission lead junior Angela Gu. Health Commission passed out stress-less kits, which included chocolate, candles, games, and stress cards.

"Stress is something that everyone deals with everyday. Especially here, people forget to stop their lives for a moment to just relax," commissioner senior Christina Stuart said.

Tuesday, Health Education Day, featured Planned Parenthood representatives who were available to answer questions, along with games and prizes.  Some teachers offered extra credit to those who attended the event.
On Wednesday, which is Health Profession Day, a speaker from the Food and Drug Administration will be coming to speak about careers in chemistry and in the rest of the science field.  The event is a collaboration with chemistry teacher Kavita Gupta.

On Thursday's Nutritious Eating Day, commission members will pass out smoothie samples and recipe guides for easy-to-make snacks such as honey-nut bagel spread. This event will take place in the Gym Lobby.

A professional trainer from 24 Hour Fitness will be coming for Fitness Day on Friday. Prizes and gym passes will be raffled out and given for the push-up contest.

While prizes and well-known health organizations bring excitement and popularity to Health Week, coordinating events with the multiple organizations and speakers was the biggest obstacle Health Commission faced.

"We were really happy that everyone [we asked to help us] immediately said yes, but big organizations like Planned Parenthood responded to our emails really slowly and made planning details difficult," Gu said.

In addition to each day's activities, movie tickets will be raffled out. All events will take place in the Rally Court unless otherwise specified, weather permitting.
