The Internet has gotten cuddlier. Hasn't anyone noticed?

It's part of the evolution of the Information Age, as documented by good.is and New York Magazine. With Facebook's "Likes", Tumblr's hearts and Twitter's stars, as well as the growing usage of IRL (in real life) identities, the Internet has become, as nymag.com's Daily Intel put it, "a more friendly, and perhaps cloying, place".

And MVHS has found its poster child for this jarringly saccharine new phenomenon in Monta Vista Gives Me Hope.

As part of an American Literature project, juniors Nicolette Duong, Melanie Gordon, Andrew Shiah, Rosa Valtanen and Briana Zimmers created an MVHS-centric version of the famous Gives Me Hope website. Set on a simple, uplifting Wordpress blog, the site allows guests to submit anecdotes about ways MVHS gives them hope. Sappy and vaguely repetitive, the site implies that virtually all students at MVHS are active, appreciative and dedicated, if overzealous, members of the community.

But the Internet is all about polite disagreement, so just after the creation of MVGMH came the advent of Monta Vista Doesn't Give Me Hope. Though it has accumulated more hits than its upbeat counterpart, the site has been under fire for simply collecting negative criticism without offering solutions. But ardent lovers of optimism have never been the most objective.

Contrary to criticism, the site doesn't expose a dark, angst and rage-ridden underbelly unlike some campus publications. In fact, MVDGMH's surprisingly insightful tales of prejudice and acute incisiveness can be more empowering and enlightening than MVGMH, which tends to be relatively one-dimensional.

But it would look unfair and narrow-minded to write off either MVGMH or MVDGMH as too fluffy or too disparaging. So let's explore. A look at each site reveals surprisingly positive intentions on both ends. MVGMH exists, as one would expect, to allow readers and users see the bright side and get empowered. MVDGMH, on the other hand, bills itself as a form of constructive criticism and a way to spread awareness of some of the issues inherent at MVHS. And while the ephemeral warm-fuzzies do bring a smile and a rare splash of compassion, problems don't solve themselves.

With the Internet's steady transformation into a mild-mannered network, rather than the verbal shootout it once was, even the potentially slanderous MVDGMH is a surprisingly levelheaded expression of various students and alumni's dissatisfaction.  In the long run, MVDGMH could possibly help the student population on the whole by pinpointing trending in dissatisfaction more than MVGMH's relatively empty praise of the school.

So, yes, the Internet has gotten cuddlier. But that doesn't mean we at MVHS are going to cuddle with it.

I think it's great that both sites exist. They complement eachother. Both sites are mvgmh.wordpress.com and mvdgmh.wordpress.com

I like how it brings attention to some problems. The post about leadership was almost spot on, and maybe it will bring some attention showing the huge disconnect between the class and the rest of the student body. Some people also don't see themselves the way mvdgmh shows them as (i.e., when they act elitist and so on) and it's something that can bring some awareness.

Um, i love how non leadership kids think THEYRE so elite by thinking theyre allowed to make assumptions like this.

if you haven't noticed, (which u probably haven't becuase lship is ab ehind the scenes class) leadership works so hard. and its ridiculous how people just complain....

do u not want proms, blue pearl, lunchtime events? go ahead. complain.

    screw cuddly.

    the internet is serious business.

"the post about leadership was almost spot on" - do you even know what we do? The post was half-garbage spewing from the writer's imagination. I won't say that the entire thing was false, but the entire thing was extremely far from true. We do have a disconnect from the rest of the student body, most of us acknowledge that, and we're more than happy to hear from you what we can do about it. We have events like Connections where, essentially, we shut up and listen to non-Leadership students from the student body talk about our events and give us feedback. There are several handfuls of us who don't like the elitist image that people feel we have - help us out here, give us suggestions.

Sure, the post brought some "awareness". But the majority of its arguments and implications were downright lies.

We truly want to be better representatives of our student body.

To give you an idea of what Leadership does, here's a list of what would not exist if there were no Leadership: junior prom, senior ball, homecoming, rallies, powderpuff, sports rallies, birthday grams, staff brunches, spirit weeks, class fundraisers, class apparel, clubs, music/speakers/tech, back in action week, club days, Link, intramural games, sports announcements, marquee, cook-off, and on and on and on.

Oh, and student representation to administration and school matters? It would be close to none.

So yeah, feel free to comment if you want to strip Monta Vista of all possible traces of character and fun and just leave 2600 students to study, study, study.

Leadership was created a few years ago. Almost all of the things you mentioned existed before that.

  • Anonymous  - well.....
I honestly think that both the ppl in leadership and the rest of the student body need to work together.

On one hand, there's the leadership class which really does try to increase student participation and awareness (at least our class does). Like for homecoming, they always encourage us to meet and help with the float, but not a whole lot of us actually go and help. Like that, we sit back, don't help out much for the rally set (though the timings are kinda difficult) and we complain about how they do everything...

On the other hand, the leadership class does sort of distance themselves from us, especially those who were elected by the student body...i don't know if they actually involve us in the decision making...they do all the work

So both sides are at fault to some extent, but we should really work together if we want to do anything effective and HAVE FUN

Okay let me go down your list. Although I agree that there would be some things that wouldn't exist if it weren't for leadership, I still stand by what i wrote earlier, which is that Leadership is a joke. Let's start with proms and dances. These events could easily be organized by the school (with input from the student body, of course) WITHOUT the leadership class having to intervene. Next, rallies and spirit weeks. Most of the student body finds these events a waste of time and money anyway. So yes, most people with be perfectly okay with losing these events. Next...
  • haha
You have to give them kudos for the birthday grams man. Such a vital part of the Monta Vista culture cannot go unnoticed.
  • lololol  - Good idea for an article
Hey, this is actually a good idea for an article. A survey on how useless most students at Monta Vista think the leadership class is. Of course, leadership might try to rig it to save face...

I just want to truly know what does everyone have against leadership?

I mean these events are designed to help students get to know each other, and to get their minds off of academics for even just 30 minutes at a time.

You all realize that just simply cutting the class doesn't solve a single thing. With more and more budget cuts, the administration isn't going to give the leadership money back to the school to help create more AP classes.

I do realize that all of these anonymous blogposts are a way for people to vent about their problems with the school and in this case leadership, but i feel that we need a better solution than to just flat out cut the class.

If you truly care about what happens to the campus and that class, offer suggestions not only here and on MVDGMH but also to the administration.

Trust me, i've worked with Mr.Hicks plenty of times before, and he is one of the most approachable people you will ever meet, and he will listen to your issues and problem...

What do you all of you guys have against leadership? Like seriously. Even the more academically smart people are somewhat elitist. EVEYRONE acts or thinks at one point as if they are better than someone else. It's called, we are PEOPLE.

Leadership tries so hard to get our school to bond, connect and take a break from studying, studying, studying. If YOU do not take advantage of it, it is your own loss.
